Calcite, Cinnabar on Hausmannite

Calcite, Cinnabar on Hausmannite

N'Chwaning II Mine, Kalahari Manganese Field, Northern Cape, South Africa

Size: 4.4 x 3.4 x 2.4 cm (Miniature)

Mercury is extremely rare from the Kalahari Manganese Field. During the late 1990s a few specimens were found. This is one of those specimens that are exceedingly hard to come by, there is lovely brightly coloured red Mercury that has been deposited onto highly lustrous acicular Hausmannite which was originally thought to be Manganite until it was xrd analysed in 2011. There is also some minor Calcite on one side of the specimen.
