Cuprite on Malachite

Cuprite on Malachite

Mashamba West Mine, DR Congo

Size: 3.4 x 4.9 x 2.1 cm (Miniature)

The specimen has cuprite on malachite. The cuprite has inter-penetrating octahedral crystals in three separate clusters and the crystal surfaces are covered in a thin wash. The malachite has grown from stubby slightly radial clusters grown together. One section has a botryoidal mound that protrudes creating definition in the profile. The underside reveals clearly the stellate pattern in the cluster growth habit. The cuprite reach up to 0.6cm and glow cherry red when backlit.
